“The crippled child will walk.”
Late to walk. The staff is still a seed.
The Epic of Sundiata is West Africa’s great public poem of exile and return. A prophecy says a child of Sogolon will found a nation. The child cannot walk. The court laughs. Years later, in exile, he stands: iron becomes a staff, the staff becomes a king. He returns, defeats Soumaoro of Sosso, and Mali is made.
Griots have carried this across the Sahel for centuries. It is not a village cult. It is an epic, as Homer is an epic: a civilizational memory of a body that was not supposed to rise, rising.
What was delayed was not denied.

INTERPRETATION
Sundiata is the self that was written off early. Shame about a slow body, a late start, a prophecy no one else can see. The work is not to pretend the delay did not happen. The work is to stand when standing becomes possible, and to found something from the years that looked like nothing.
The shadow
The laugh that became a cosmology. Delay mistaken for a verdict.
Four lookings
Campbell
What delay have you mistaken for a verdict?
von Franz
Who laughed early, and what would standing in front of them cost you now?
Hillman
If the boon is a people, not a trophy, what are you actually trying to found?
Coelho
What first step is already in the body, while the court is still laughing?

A delayed king
A short night: laugh, iron, a first court. The long night: buffalo-mother, stolen griot, Mema, Krina. No voice plays unless you ask. One telling, carried by jelis.
