The Salmon of Knowledge

He burned his thumb and knew.

Seven years’ wait · The blister · The thumb to the tooth

Finn mac Cumhaill, as a boy named Demne, is set to cook the salmon for his teacher Finegas. He bursts a blister, licks his thumb, and the imbas: the illuminating knowledge: lands on him instead. After that he has only to put his thumb to his tooth to know.

The tale is comic and exact. Wisdom often arrives through an accident of service, not through the person who planned to be wise.
