Orpheus

He looked back.

Eurydice dies. Orpheus descends with a lyre instead of a sword and the underworld weeps. He is granted the impossible: she may follow, if he does not look back until they reach the light. He looks. She is gone a second time, which is worse than the first.

Later versions tear him apart; his head keeps singing. The glance is the whole teaching. Love that cannot bear uncertainty will sabotage its own miracle. Campbell would call it a failed return. Von Franz would say the anima cannot be dragged; she must arrive.
