After a catastrophe: a fight of powers that cracks heaven: the sky leaks and the world floods with fire and water. Nüwa smelts colored stones to patch the hole and steadies the four directions. Humans, in some tellings, she has already made from yellow earth, laboriously by hand, then by dragging a cord through clay when the work grew too large.

She is the patron of the unglamorous miracle: things can be broken and still be lived in, if someone will do the mending.
